Verdejo wine is one of the most appreciated white wines in Spain. Fresh, aromatic and very pleasant to drink, it has become a popular choice for those looking for a white wine with personality, yet easy to enjoy.

Although people often talk about “a Rueda” and “a Verdejo” as if they were the same thing, there is a small difference worth explaining: Verdejo is the grape variety, while Rueda is the Designation of Origin. In other words, many Rueda wines are made with Verdejo grapes, but the two terms do not mean exactly the same thing.

At Bodegas Cerrosol, we know this variety very well, as it is an essential part of our Doña Beatriz Verdejo, one of the most representative white wines of our winery.

What is Verdejo wine?

Verdejo is a white wine made from Verdejo grapes, a variety closely linked to the Rueda region in Castilla y León.

It is known for its fresh and fruity aromas, with notes of green apple, citrus fruit, stone fruit and subtle herbal hints. On the palate, it is usually fresh, balanced and has a slightly bitter finish, which is very characteristic of this grape variety.

This combination of freshness, aroma and balance is what makes Verdejo such a versatile and enjoyable wine.

Where does Verdejo come from?

Qué es un Verdejo

The Verdejo grape has a very special relationship with the Rueda Designation of Origin, an area renowned for the quality of its white wines.

The climate in this region, with significant temperature differences between day and night, helps preserve the freshness of the grapes and encourages a good aromatic expression. In addition, its soils and long winemaking tradition contribute to the creation of white wines with their own distinctive character.

That is why, when we talk about a Verdejo from Rueda, we are talking about a white wine with origin, identity and a very recognisable personality.

Is Verdejo dry or sweet?

Verdejo is usually a dry white wine. However, it can be very fruity and pleasant on the palate.

This sometimes causes confusion, because a wine can have fruity aromas without being sweet. In the case of Verdejo, it is common to find a fresh, aromatic and dry wine, but with a smooth and balanced sensation in the mouth.

That is one of the reasons why it is so popular: it is fresh without being sharp, aromatic without being heavy, and it pairs very well with both appetisers and meals.

How to recognise a good Verdejo from Rueda

A good Verdejo should be clean, fresh and balanced. In the glass, it usually shows a pale straw-yellow colour with greenish reflections, bright and attractive in appearance.

On the nose, it should offer clear and pleasant aromas: white fruit, citrus fruit, fresh herbs or hints of hay. On the palate, it should maintain good acidity, a pleasant entry and a persistent finish.

One of the most characteristic details of the Verdejo grape is that slight bitter touch at the end, which adds personality and makes the wine invite you to take another sip.

When to drink a Verdejo wine

Verdejo is a very versatile wine. It can be enjoyed as an aperitif, with an informal meal or alongside fresh and light dishes.

It pairs especially well with fish, seafood, mild rice dishes, salads, fresh cheeses, vegetables, light pasta dishes and appetisers.

It is also a great choice for those looking for a fresh white wine to share, without complications, but with quality and personality.
